About

Harper Dent's Biography

Harper Dent is an Australian speculative fiction writer living with a disability. Much of her inspiration comes from the natural world, which she enjoys daily, living on a large outback property with her chickens and goats (and of course the resident kangaroos and kookaburras). She often writes in the company of her boisterous dog, Elvis - a dog who believes barrelling people over in public is a form of affection.
Harper's work ranges from caring for baby dragons on a phoenix ranch, to training apprentice Animancers. Despite exploring a number of speculative genres, Harper's passion is in the fantasy realm with inspiration from the likes of Robin Hobb, John Flanagan and Christopher Paolini. A number of Australian authors have also been key in influencing Harper's love of books, including John Marsden, Garth Nix, Michael Pryor, Isobelle Carmody and Emily Rodda.
Apart from writing, Harper has a background in science and the environment. Her extensive science background and love of nature allows for a unique view in creating her fantastical realms. She also loves dark chocolate, kale (yes, kale!) and being on boats despite being ridiculously prone to sea-sickness.
